It is in fact estimated that approximately one third of the population is actually illiterate, putting it far above the National average found elsewhere in the United States.

Due to problems in the DC public school system in the past, the number of private schools in the area is quite high, leading to further direct separation from inner city youth and their more stable counterparts found outside of the city center.
